End of support for Windows 10
Windows 10 End of Life Is Coming – Here’s what to know:
If you’re still using Windows 10, you’re not alone! More than 60% of computers running Microsoft’s operating system are using Windows 10. Despite this, Microsoft has officially announced that support for Windows 10 will end on October 14, 2025. That might seem far off, but it’s right around the corner — and being prepared will save you time, money, and potential headaches.
You may have already seen some pop-ups or alerts on your PC warning you about this change. Many devices do not have the hardware required to be compatible with Windows 11, so when support ends for Windows 10, those computers will no longer receive security updates, leaving them vulnerable to viruses, malware, and other cyber threats.
The good news? You don’t need to panic — and you don’t necessarily need a new computer. Here are your options:
1. Extend Windows 10 Security Updates for Just $30/Year
Microsoft is offering an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program that allows you to continue receiving essential security patches beyond the 2025 deadline.
You can enroll in one of three ways:
At no cost, if you're syncing PC settings across devices
Using 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points
Paying $30/year (plus local taxes)
This is a simple, affordable way to keep your system protected while you decide on your long-term solution. If your PC still runs well, this option buys you valuable time without rushing into big changes. Your local Young Whippersnapper can help with this!
2. Switch to Linux Mint — A Free, Lightweight Alternative
If your computer is too old to run Windows 11 comfortably, or if you want a long-term solution without spending money on new hardware, Linux Mint is an excellent alternative.
It’s free, easy to use, and works well on older systems. I’ve helped many clients make the switch, and most are surprised by how familiar it feels. It handles everyday tasks like browsing the web, checking email, working with documents, and watching videos — all without the resource strain of newer Windows versions.
Linux Mint can breathe new life into aging computers, and it’s a great way to extend your system’s usefulness without breaking the bank.
3. Buy a New PC — Only If You Really Need To
If your current PC is slow, unreliable, or simply not cutting it anymore, a new machine might be the right move. But in many cases, this should be your last resort.
With a bit of maintenance, a performance tune-up, or a switch in operating systems, your current setup could still serve you well for years. I’m happy to help assess your system and make recommendations that suit your budget and needs.
